Newport County made a deliberate decision to send a team supplemented by a number of fringe and younger players to gain experience. Both teams took a little time to settle down in the blustery conditions. The Beavers took the lead in the 34th minute when West Ham’s on-loan, Jack Jeffrey brought down the ball from Wells’s free-kick, swivelled and placed his shot wide of Newport’s keeper, Tony Pennock. Newport responded with an equaliser six minutes later, teenager James Simpson’s shot taking a deflection off Wells on its way into the net. Playing into the wind in the second half seemed to suit Hampton better. With just over an hour gone Jack Jeffrey and Godfrey combined to set up a chance for McAuley who rammed the ball home. Pennock made a string of saves to keep Newport in the game but it was the home side who went through. The Beavers drew Forest Green Rovers in the Fourth Round, losing narrowly by the only goal of the game at Beveree.
