THOSE WERE THE DAYS
19th November 1988

Isthmian (Vauxhall-Opel) League; Division 1

Hampton 3 (Holman, Walkes 41’, Rice 49’) Southwick 4 (Farmer 59’ 84’, Pook 33’, Jones 40’,) Att; 123

Hampton;-
Lee Orkney; Carlos Gibbs, Simon Edwards, Tim Hollands, Gary Cambridge, Gary McKechnie, Lee Holman, Sean O’Connell, Ricky Walkes, Sean Rice, Clive Marich.

Southwick;-
Keith Cheal; Micky Russell, Lee Cox, Mark Nye, Micky Farmer, John Panayi, Graham Farmer, Trevor Dove, Geoff Pook, Richard Cheal, Brian Jones.

Struggling Southwick arrived at Beveree and left with all the points after a seven-goal thriller. The lead changed four times and at the end of ninety minutes Hampton were four points adrift at the foot of the table. Hampton had Ted Murphy, caretaker manager, overseeing his second game. Hampton opened the scoring, O’Connell created the opening, Walkes allowed the ball to run past him to Holman who scored his first goal for the club. Southwick equalised when Graham Farmer’s near post header was met at the far post by Geoff Pook. Southwick then went ahead when Brian Jones had an easy tap-in. Just before half-time it was 2-2, Walkes scoring his seventh of the season. The second half saw more of the same. Hampton took the lead again, O’Connell went on a run and set up Rice at the near post. Yet again, the visitors responded, a long run by Micky Russell was met by a header from Graham Farmer. The last and winning strike was by Farmer, Hampton pushing up were caught out by Pook’s run and found Farmer, in space to score is second goal.
A few weeks later Brian Laing was appointed Hampton Manager and managed to drag a sinking Hampton up the league and safety.

I presume that's Sean Rice, father of Declan, in the Hampton line up?

It is indeed. If memory serves we signed him from local club Ditton FC. Think he might have played for Molesey after us.
