It was probably at about half-time that Dave Anderson probably wondered about the wisdom of turning up when his teams were playing the Beavers – this was the fifth successive defeat that he had experienced against Hampton (4 with AFC Wimbledon and now, St Albans). The St Albans defence didn’t do much to help their manager break his unfortunate run. Hampton had taken the lead in the 6th minute with a diamond strike from Godfrey, over 20 yards out, that flashed past City goalkeeper, Nick Eyre. Worse was to follow in the 38th minute when faced with a back pass from Gary Elphick and an onrushing Hodges, the keeper swung his foot at the ball and missed it completely, the unlucky Elphick being the recipient of the own goal. Just before half-time Lee Clark gave the visitors some hope when he headed in Hassam Sulaiman’s cross. Two goals in a five-minute period during the second half, saw off any hope of a City comeback. Both of the brothers Lake were involved, Stuart setting Frost away who then cut the ball back for Ryan to nod the ball past Eyre. It was left to McAulay to hit a sublime strike from a narrow angle to ruin Eyre’s and Anderson’s day.
