THOSE WERE THE DAYS
11th September 1973

Isthmian (Rothmans) League Division 2

Maidenhead United 3 (Kemp, pen 48’, 60’, Kelman 85) Hampton 3 (Cutler 30’ 82’, Earl 44’) (Att; 370)

Maidenhead United;-
P Whitlock; P Johnson, P Mountany, G Olson, M Cole, M Shepherd, J Kelman, M Kemp, M Chatterton, D Kemp, P Wright.
Sub; D Wooley

Hampton;-
Chris Page; Alan Earl, Ken Reed, Brian Crandley, Peter Minor, Dennis Sausse, Micky Cook, Ted Yorke, Roy Cutler, Phil Sperling, Steve Medwin.
Sub; Jim Baptie

An absorbing encounter, Maidenhead began on top, Hampton eased in front, before the home side came back to draw. Maidenhead started like a train (much like those that pass the ground) and could have had three goals in as many minutes. Hampton survived the early onslaught to hit back. Cutler gave Hampton the lead on the half-hour, helped in part by Whitlock, Maidenhead’s keeper. Just before half-time Hampton went 2-0 ahead, Earl took advantage of Shepherd’s dalliance and hooked the ball wide of Whitlock. Early in the second half, Earl handled the ball in the area and Kemp (M or D?) scored from the penalty spot. The same player (?) seized on a mis-hit clearance to bring Maidenhead level. Despite Maidenhead starting to dominate the game it was Hampton that scored next. In the 82nd minute Cutler ‘strolled’ through the Maidenhead defence to score his second of the game. Hampton’s lead did not last long as minutes later, due to a complete misunderstanding, Reed and Page collided, leaving Kelman free to run the ball into an empty net to level the game at 3-3. Points shared.
