THOSE WERE THE DAYS

7th August 1971

Pre-Season Friendly

Hampton 0 St Albans City 1 (Oxley, 87’)

Hampton;-
Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Peter Minor (Dave Blackmore), Keith Hanna, Dave Proctor, Micky Roach, John Peasgood (Peter Farren), Arthur Burrage, Peter Allen, Phil Sperling (Chris Cole), Hugh Lindsay.

St Albans City;-
R Bloxham; R Grant, L Burgess, P Wood, Baigent, D Neville, Williams, W Ratty, R Childs, S Atkins, J Mitchell (J Oxley).

Hampton, newcomers to Athenian League Division 2, hosted Isthmian League side, St Albans City in a friendly a week before the start of the season proper. Hampton featured three new signings, Ron Whiteaker (from St Albans!), Dave Proctor and Athur Burrage (both from Hounslow Town). Apparently before the game Hampton manager announced that his sides would adopt 4-3-3 as their preferred style of play. The hosts gave a good account of themselves in the first half, twice in the opening ten minutes, Allen went close to scoring. In the 25th minute Whiteaker had to dive to prevent Childs scoring. At the other end Bloxham flew across his goal to deny Allen. Bloxham was called into action again to deny Earl just before half time. Hampton made changes in the second half and as a result the visitors got back into the game. Three minutes from time Childs beat Whiteaker but it still needed Oxley to slot the ball home.
