THOSE WERE THE DAYS
1st August 1970

Pre-Season Friendly

Maidenhead United 3 Hampton 3 (Rowlands, Peasgood, Sperling)

Hampton;-
Andy Wellsted; Alan Earl, Hill, Ray Monk (Ian Wenlock), Dave Johnson, Phil Sperling, Arthur Rowlands, Micky Roach, John Peasgood, Brian Myers (Peter Farren), Jeff Sillett.

Hampton were leading 2-0 at half-time, then 3-1, in their first friendly of the season, however were eventually pegged back by Maidenhead who scored three goals in the second half! Missing a few regulars, Hampton had a re-shuffled line-up but soon settled into the game. Rowlands put the visitors ahead, then new signing, Peasgood added a second. A clash of heads between Monk and Johnson led to the former going to hospital, Johnson, coming back on after being ‘stitched up’. Maidenhead pulled one back after the interval before Sperling made it 3-1. Against a weakened defence Maidenhead scored twice more to level proceedings at 3-3. Maidenhead, from the Premier Division of the Athenian League, were no doubt relieved to have held off Hampton from the ‘lower’ Spartan League.
