THOSE WERE THE DAYS
29th October 1995

F A Vase 1st Round

Wealdstone 0 Hampton 3 (Cheshire 8’, Drew 83’, D Smith 87’) Att; 333

Wealdstone;-
Rob Tenkorang; Lee Tekell, Fegus Moore, Paul Bhatia, Steve Croad, Rod Brathwaite, Chris Walton, Neil Yates, Kolvin Stone (Paul Sheldrick), Ben Marshall, Troy Birch.
Unused Subs;- Tony Smith, James Moore

Hampton;-
Mark Russell; Kevin Duffell, Lee Thornton (Darren Smith,73’), Lyndon Buckwell, Steve Cheshire, Warren Bayliss, Phil George, Mark Wilson (Barry Moore,62’), Warren Drew, Dave Rattue, Jon Reilly.
Unused Sub; Danny Lavender

Prior to this game, Wealdstone’s Manager, Gordon Bartlett, had reminded his players that Match Referee, Mick Robinson was not one to keep his cards in his pocket. Presumably the players forgot the warning, as the ‘Stones’ ended with nine players on the pitch! Hampton’s performance was sound, rather than spectacular, but was helped very much by Wealdstone’s indiscipline and a no-nonsense match official. Hampton went into an early lead, George and Cheshire combined on the right, Cheshire glancing a header past Rob Tenkorang. A clearance by Duffell kept Hampton’s lead secure whilst Bayliss and George both threatened a second Hampton goal. It didn’t take long for the home crowd to get on the back of the referee. The game started to get away from Wealdstone when, in the 50th minute, Rod Brathwaite was sent off for fouling Wilson from behind. Drew and Bayliss both had headers just off target and then Referee Robinson really got the crowd going when he sent off Fergus Moore in the 77th minute for a second caution. It was then left for Hampton to score twice more; Drew heading in a Rattue corner and Smith applying the coup-de-grace, scoring from a Bayliss lay-off.

Hi, I've got this one down as being played on Saturday 28th October, was it played on the Sunday? I can see that Wealdstone's archive also says Sunday, 29th for this game, but the newspaper report within mentions Saturday!

I definitely remember going there on a Sunday once, I think it was because they were groundsharing at Edgware Town at the time. Fairly sure it was this game.

Yes, it was on a Sunday (29th October) due to Wealdstone ground sharing at Edgware Town.
