THOSE WERE THE DAYS

23rd October 1993

Isthmian (Diadora) League Division 2

Hampton 0 Thame United 3 (Rodney, Russell, Mason) Att; 122

Hampton;-
Scott Tarr; Brian Bere (Gary Cambridge), Gary Cope, Malcolm Dickenson, Steve Cheshire, Darren Smith, Mark Fabian (Gary Smith), Simon Edwards, Jim Wigmore, Micky Beadle, Scott Corbett.

Thame United;-
Steve Mayhew; Jimmy Hamilton, Julio Barresi, M Faulkner, Richard Carr, Martin Shepherd, Andy Mason, Ronnie Russell, Phil Rodney, Nigel Mott, Dave Watson.
Subs; Leigh Bastable, Darren Britnell

Hampton and Thame United were locked together, in mid-table, on 14 points after 10 league games when they met at Beveree. What should have been a close contest turned into a one-sided affair as the visitors were given the freedom of the park. By half-time goals, from Phil Rodney and Ronnie Russell had put Thame in a dominant position. It wasn’t until late into the second half that Thames’ keeper Steve Mayhew had much to do; he smothered a header from Wigmore, then was able to calmly watch as a Bere effort dropped harmlessly onto the roof of the net. Andy Mason made sure of the win with a goal in the 79th minute. All Hampton could offer was a couple of late bookings for Wigmore and Smith. Hampton’s manager, Mark Fewings, was now on borrowed time and after a midweek cup defeat against Potters Bar Town and a crunching 4-1 defeat home to Malden Vale the next weekend, he was ‘asked’ to resign his position.
