Well, that didn’t quite go to plan! Two weeks after accounting for Kingstonian, the Beavers were felled by Western League minnows, Paulton Town – a match that in normal circumstances shouldn’t have gone the way it did. There was some excuse, though – Adrian Allen, Rob Paris and Paul Kelly were all out due to illness or injury. On the coach journey to Paulton, Jamie Jarvis and Alan Inns were taken ill (though both did play, feeling less than 100%). No excuses about the welcome though, the pitch or the excellent facilities, but when it came down to it, the home side were the hungrier. After nine minutes a three man move involving Mark James, Scott Woodman and Andy Catley ended with the latter unleashing a shot that hit both uprights before nestling in the back of the Hampton net (from memory, their only shot on target). John Rendell, in the home goal, played his part – particularly in denying O’Connor who was Hampton’s main scoring threat. It took until the 59th minute for Hampton to get past Rendell, Channell won a corner, O’Connor swept the ball over for Jeffrey to head in the equaliser. A replay was on the cards until the 69th minute when disaster struck, with Nathan Brown shaping to shoot, Morley got a tackle in, only to see the ball fly off his toe-end past Blake. Alan Devonshire refused to offer any excuses, stating that Hampton didn’t play well enough to win.
