THOSE WERE THE DAYS

8th October 1983

Isthmian (Servowarm) League; Division 1

Boreham Wood 4 (Baker 2, Wallace, Robinson) Hampton 2 (Shodeinde 48’, Russell 76’)

Boreham Wood;-
Steve Waller; Steve O’Neill, Steve Foody, Les McCormack, Steve Robinson, Russell Townsend, Sean Baker, Geoff Craig, Tom Murphy, Nigel Hann, Steve Wallace.
Sub; Graeme Cowie.

Hampton;-
Paul Riley; Richard Smith, Tim Hollands, Steve Rogers, Steve Smith, Perry Tunesi, Steve Russell, Peter Shodeinde, Mick Heselden, Sean O’Connell (Brian Lake, 83), Alec MacFarlane.

Hampton welcomed back MacFarlane to the fold after he lost his place in the Farnborough Town team. Manager Roger Charland elected to play MacFarlane in midfield in place of Lake, who dropped to the bench. The re-shuffle didn’t go particularly well as Hampton were soon trailing to the home side in what became their first away defeat of the season. Both Sean Baker and Steve Wallace scored early on as Hampton struggled to get into the game. Early in the second half Hampton pulled a goal back. Steve Waller failed to gather in a shot from Hollands, Shodeinde, alert to the situation, scored from close range. In the 76th minute the scores were level. Heselden headed a free-kick from Rogers against the crossbar and Russell nodded in the loose ball. Hampton failed to keep the home side out as two further goals wrapped up the game. Baker laid on a goal for Steve Robinson, before Baker made sure of the win six minutes before the end of the game.
