THOSE WERE THE DAYS
27th November 1993
Isthmian (Diadora) League Division 2

Hemel Hempstead Town 0 Hampton 1 (Prior)

Hampton ;-
Scott Tarr; Ian O’Brien, Gary Cambridge (Gary Smith), Malcolm Dickenson, Steve Cheshire, Tony Nolan (Joe Rayfield), Darren Smith, Mark Harper, Nathan Poffley, David Prior, Lee Rabbetts.

Hampton won their first game under new manager, Paul Reynolds (who had taken over a week or so earlier) with a much-improved display at Hemel Hempstead. Playing down the slope, Hampton started strongly, Darren Smith went close, and O’Brien’s dangerous cross was headed away from under the bar. Prior and Poffley, (both recently signed by Reynolds from his previous club, Wokingham Town) carved out a chance in the 20th minute for Rabbetts, but his shot went over the bar. Rabbetts had a second chance minutes later but again failed to finish. Hampton’s superiority finally told when in the 69th minute they scored. Nolan and Poffley created a chance for debutant, Prior, who shielded the ball from his marker and slotted the chance home. Only determined defending by the home side prevented Hampton running away with the game. The new regime would not last too long as Reynold’s tenure would end before next March was out.
