THOSE WERE THE DAYS
24th November 2001
Isthmian (Ryman) League Premier Division

HRBFC 1 Nade) Canvey Island 5 Att; 449

HRBFC ;-
Stuart McKenzie; Steve Omonua (Kezie Ibe,63’), Ronnie Girvan (Ernst Valentin, 46), Phil Dicker, Matt Stowell, Dudley Gardner, Steve French, Richard O’Connor, Warren Williams (Ryan Hillary, 82), Paul de Luca, Raphael Nade.

When Nade equalised Chris Duffy’s go-ahead goal for the visitors, it seemed that the Beavers were back in the game. The first half ended all square but in the second half Canvey trampled all over Hampton. Already short of several players, injuries to full backs Omonua and Girvan further disrupted Hampton and the visitors, with Julian Dicks given too much space, took full advantage. Gardner and Nade both had good efforts turned away, but after that it was all Canvey. In the 64th minute Wayne Vaughan chipped over McKenzie from twenty yards; minutes later, Vaughan scored again, this time with a far post header; more goals followed from Mark Stimson in the 75th minute and Ben Chenery in the 80th minute as Canvey closed out a 5-1 win. Referee Eric Makrell kept his cards in his pocket – no bookings! Canvey would go on to finish runners-up for the second season running, whilst Hampton finished 20th – a season of contrast, with a 6-0 home win over Croydon and a 5-0 home defeat to St Albans City.

Would be very interested to know where Ronnie Girvan ended up. Good player and very young when he was with us.

Ronnie left he club around February 2003. He didn't hit it off with Chic Botley when he came in as manager (you can read the manager's comments in various home programmes in December/January!). Ronnie joined Farnborough linking up again with Ian McDonald. In 03/04 he had a spell with Staines Town.

I remember when Ronnie first signed and dropped down to play for the youth team I was in.
I seem to remember him getting sent off about 20 mins into the game.
