Hampton felt that they should have won this game with all their pressure, but, if you don’t take your chances when offered there is always the chance of letting the opposition in. Chertsey’s best chance came in the 15th minute which saw Rusell diving at the feet of ex-Beaver Steve Stairs, then a Hampton effort went begging, Lewis heading a Jolly cross over the bar with keeper Paul Holland rooted to the spot. In the second half Vines and Lewis combined to set up a goal but a return pass was mis-hit. Holland then made a good save from a Vines header. In the 62nd minute Hampton finally went ahead when the always dangerous converted Reilly’s free-kick at the second attempt. Vines should have made the game safe in the 76th minute, again from a pass by Reilly, further chances from Reilly and Lewis were spurned. In the last few moments of the game Keith Cooper took advantage of some sloppy defending to grab an unexpected point.
