THOSE WERE THE DAYS
28th September 1963
Surrey Senior League
Hampton 4 (Griffin 2, Whing, Cooper) Westfield 0
Hampton ;-
Joe Andrews; Gerry Biggs, Roger Blackmore, Peter Jennings, Ron King, Don Bevan, Jakie Cooper, Ron Griffin, Johnny Whing, Georgie Hill, Billy Groves.
This 4-0 win over Westfield was described as ‘champagne football’, as Hampton’s assault on the league title started to look very promising indeed. King was dominant at the back whilst Griffin had a great game at inside right and the two wingers Groves and Cooper were feeding the forwards with deadly crosses. Whing converted a cross from Groves in the 6th minute, followed in the 25th minute by a drive by Griffin after being set up by Groves and Whing. On the hour mark, Cooper beat the full-back and instead of crossing the ball in, surprised everyone by electing to shoot, 3-0. The fourth and final goal came ten minutes from time when Griffin drove a free-kick through the line of defenders. Apparently even the referee, Mr D Gowers, and his linesmen had a good game – praise indeed.
