This fixture between Alan Devonshire’s current and previously managed sides was overshadowed to some extent by reports that Hampton’ Associate Chairman had resigned a few days earlier, with thoughts turning to the future funding of the Beavers. However, football soon took centre stage. Hampton took the lead in the 26th minute when quick thinking by Yaku allowed him to react first to a long ball and he stabbed the ball home past the advancing Louis Wells. At the end of the first half, Lovett, parried a Grant Cooer strike but Serge Marofo was denied by the post. The visitors did equalise during a scruffy second half as Hampton sat back to defend their lead and in the 57th minute Dwane Lee stole in at the far post to volley in an Ashley Smith free kick. Maidenhead had two more chances to take the points, Lee heading an effort down, and over, the cross bar whilst right at the death Leon Fisher crashed a shot against the bar. Devonshire’s reaction to all that was going on, was to give the players a few days off to recharge their batteries.
