THOSE WERE THE DAYS
29th August 1983
Isthmian League Cup (Hitachi) 1st Rd
Hampton 2 (Russell, Reader) Epping Town 1
Hampton ;-
Paul Riley; Richard Smith, Gary Maynard (John Reader, 35’), Steve Rogers, Steve Smith, Sean O’Connell, Steve Russell, Peter Shodeinde, Tim Hollands, Simon Constable, Brian Lake.
An injury to defender Maynard, interrupted Hampton’s progress to the second round of the Hitachi League Cup. Maynard was stretchered off with damaged knee ligaments after falling awkwardly in the 35th minute. Hollands who had been given the number 9 shirt after an injury to Mick Heselden (injured playing cricket!), reverted to his defensive duties. Hampton were leading at the time thanks to a Russell strike in the 7th minute. Two minutes before half time Epping equalised through Steve Mann, who took advantage of a moment’s confusion between Riley and Lake. The hosts were struggling to make any headway in the second half until the 76th minute when substitute Reader’s shot crept inside a post (a goal which proved to be his only one for the first team that season).
