Hampton took on a youthful Charlton Athletic team in their second pre-season friendly of the 22/23 season. Charlton started brightly, but it was Hampton who took the lead in the 6th minute lead through Ilic when he capitalised on an error by Charlton’s right back, Harris O’Connor, cut in and lobbed Nathan Harvey. The home side doubled their lead in the 25th minute, Springer crossing from the left, Barzey getting an outstretched foot to guide the ball into the left-hand corner. The second half started with Charlton, again, looking lively, but it was Hampton who struck first. Inman and Figuera both went close before Kurran-Browne was brought down on the hour mark and he struck his penalty into the bottom left corner to put Hampton 3-0 ahead. Charlton finally got on the scoresheet when Daniel Kanu was on hand for a tap in, after Allen failed to hold on to Charlie Barker’s shot. Minutes later Kanu was brought down and Euan Williams duly despatched the spot kick for Charlton’s second.
It is worth remarking that only Gray and Julian (now manager) remain at the club just two years later.
