THOSE WERE THE DAYS
28th January 1989
Isthmian (Vauxhall-Opel) League Division 1
Hampton 0 Woking 2 Att; 307

Chris Vagg: Clive Marich, Nigel Hatcher, Steve Cheshire, Robert Gold, Sean O’Connell (Daniel Aluko, 81), Paul Lucas, Malcolm Dickenson, Ricky Walkes, Gary Jenkins, Mark Gill.

Hampton were probably glad to see the back of January 1989, two draws and four defeats was not a good start to a New Year. Woking, with an unbeaten away record proved too strong a test for the Beavers. Heavy rain required a late pitch inspection before the game could start. Hampton started brightly, Jenkins bursting through only to be stopped by a crucial tackle by Lloyd Wye. Hatcher then illustrated the dangers of the muddy conditions sending a back pass to Vagg which was fortunately wide of the goal, conceding the first corner of the game. Plenty of attacking play but no goals in the first half though Mark Davis and Richard Buzaglo both went close. In the 49th minute Mark Biggins robbed Gold and found Terry Worsfold who slid the ball slowly past Vagg, to put Woking ahead. Marich under hit a back pass to Vagg but an alert Hatcher cleared the danger. Gill almost beat Woking keeper, Dearden, with a low shot but in the 72nd minute Biggins dribbled the ball through the Hampton defence to beat Vagg to effectively put the game beyond Hampton’s reach.
