THOSE WERE THE DAYS
September 6th 1983
Isthmian (Servowarm) League Division 1
Hampton 4 Clapton 1
Shodeinde 2, Russell, S Smith
Paul Riley; Clive Marich, Richard Smith, Steve Rogers, Steve Smith, Sean O’Connell (Fred Wilson), Steve Russell, Peter Shodeinde, Tim Hollands, Simon Constable, Brian Lake.
Hampton were a goal down before many supporters had taken up their positions, Clapton scoring a penalty after 11 seconds. Two minutes later Shodeinde equalised, heading home Russell’s cross, and then he scored again just eight minutes later. In the second half Steve Smith put Hampton further ahead with a header following a set-piece. The final goal was scored by Russell. Described as a thoroughly convincing performance, Hollands was deputising up front for the injured Mick Heselden.
At this early stage of the season Hampton were second behind Wembley.
