THOSE WERE THE DAYS
August 7th 1993
Pre-Season Friendly
Southall 3 Hampton 4
Jenkins 3, Corbett

No team list – well, it was a friendly!

Hampton won their third friendly on the trot with a 4-3 win at Isthmian League Division 3 side, Southall. Hampton led 3-0 after thirty minutes, with a brace from Gary Jenkins and a Scott Corbett strike. Jenkins opened the scoring after five minutes, Corbett scoring fifteen minutes later. Joe Rayfield crossed for Jenkins to head the third. Southall then responded to level things up at 3-3. Jenkins made sure of the win with his third, and Hampton’s fourth.
Other players likely to have played would have included David Hook, Mark Fabian, Simon Edwards, Tim Hollands, Mark Harper, Malcolm Dickenson, Gary Cope, Steve Cheshire and Roger Beadle.

Again, some very good players amongst that squad, but this time a few who weren't really quite up to scratch. Rayield ended up having trials with Barnet, who were then a league side, but he quickly faded from the scene after that. Corbett went on to have a decent non league career, mostly at Kingstonian who were higher up and a bigger coub than us in those days.
Harper...well we all know what happened to him!

Where would that have been played, as they moved from Western Road in 1992?

According to Hampton programmes from the time, the game was played at Western Road.

The Hammersmith & Shepherds Bush Gazzette reported on 2nd July...

Southall FC report back for pre-season training at their Western Road ground on Tuesday July 6 and sessions will continue every Tuesday and Thursday at 6.45pm.

It also goes on to list some already arranged home friendlies during July.

I have a memory that we went to Western Road for one friendly in the early/mid nineties and our manager of the time refused point blank to play, having seen the state of the pitch. Anyone able to confirm?
