THOSE WERE THE DAYS
August 1st 1981
Middlesex Charity Cup (Group Match)
Harrow Borough 1 Hampton 0

Ian Mason; Richard Smith, Dennis Pym, Brian Messom, Steve Smith, John Chilvers, Tim Hollands, Mick Heselden, Dave Bonner (Brett Walker), Junior Crooks, John Reader.

Hampton (Division 1) travelled to Harrow Borough (Premier Division) for their opening Charity Cup Group game. During the mid-70s the Middlesex FA organised the Charity Cup into an early season group tournament, the winners of each group going straight to a semi-final. The only goal came in the 30th minute when Hampton found themselves overloaded at the back when George Duck (on his debut) played David Pearce in, who scored with a shot that beat the diving Mason. Reader went close to an equaliser in the second half but Harrow held on to the win. Hampton lost their next group match against Uxbridge and exited the competition.

Ian Mason was at the recent Met Police friendly. Good keeper. This team for me though summed up Hamptons 1980s. Decent keepers, reasonable defence but never really consistent enough going forward. That's my memory of it anyway!
Interesting to see Dave Pearce in the opposition line up...he later played for us in the 1990s towards the end of his career and was still a very capable forward.
