THOSE WERE THE DAYS
March 3rd 1992
Isthmian (Diadora) League Division 3
Hampton 6 Hornchurch 0 Att; 151
Ewing 5, Sansom

David Hook; Brian Bere, Martin Heath, Malcolm Dickenson, Steve Cheshire, Tim Hollands (Roland Terry), Fred Amissah, Steve Bates, Peter Sansom, Gary Ewing, Matt Downs (Paul Reed).

One-way traffic on a Tuesday evening at Beveree. Sansom opened the scoring twenty-five minutes into his home debut. After that, it was the Ewing show. Two goals before half-time were followed by three more, taking his total to date to 23 – in all Ewing would notch up 30 goals in the sort of season that strikers dream about.
BTW, Sansom was a cousin of Kenny Sansom, Arsenal & England, scoring 3 goals in a nine game stay.

Really enjoying these posts. Remember that the Isthmian League Division 3 was probably about equivalent to the Combined Counties League of today. David Hook was a terrific keeper to have for that level. I think Brian Laing had brought him over from his previous club Feltham. Dicko, Chesh and Hollands were all players who had testimonials with us and again, could really have been playing higher. A certain Steve Bates was in the lineup too, who I remember as being quite a busy player. Brian Bere was another good player. Gary Ewing though...he didn't really look like a senior footballer but he was deadly in the penalty area for a couple of years.
This was an odd time for us. We'd struggled a bit in the division above for a while but arguably seemed just a bit big for Division 3. Funny then that we didn't really seem to take it by storm. We certainly had some good players but were a bit prone to misfiring occasionally and ended up being promoted on a technicality.
