First game of the season, several new players and like most sets of supporters excitement with possible apprehensive feelings. Might depend on team selection and as usual injuries.
Hope for a point minimum, they will be difficult first time out.

Fernandes out presumably injured, so Hines in at left back and Donaldson in central defence.

Well that was a bit of a disaster...to contrive to lose that game after being as on top as we were by HT is pretty poor. We should really been out of sight by the break but didn't really take our chances or create enough clear cut opportunities. Cheshunt were pretty dire until we went 2-0 up and suddenly we collapsed. Still not 100% sure why...maybe we took Wood and Iilic off a bit too early, maybe we need another experienced defender, but, whatever the reason, losing to Cheshunt will be one of those games we look back on with regret. Should have seen this game out and won it.

A bit early to draw any conclusions but, initially if Fernandes is injury prone then we need to get in another centre half.

Manager will have some real concerns after throwing away a two goal lead with 15 minutes to go to lose to promoted Cheshunt. First half Hampton put in a decent performance and deserved their lead with Wood tapping in after Donaldson’s penalty was saved. Ilic saw a good shot tipped on to the bar by their keeper and another Wood header was chalked off for a marginal offside. Barzey as in pre season was Hampton’s most dangerous player. Second half and we never got going. Cheshunt had little about them in terms of creativity but physically started to dominate midfield and our passing game fell to pieces. Barzey’s well taken goal from Babalola’s first touch after coming on for Wood was against the run of play and should have signalled some more defensive changes in midfield where Whittingham, Gray and Miller Rodney were being out-competed. But slack defending gave Cheshunt a lifeline with Hines left exposed. Two further goals also down Hines’ and Donaldson’s side of the defence followed in almost identical circumstances. We just couldn’t get to grips with it in midfield. Really poor game management. Not sure why we didn’t see Shokunbi today. Maybe Block would have been a better partner for Inman today with Hines at right back rather a more unfamiliar left back role.

Thanks Tony for your comments. Craig Edwards is an experienced manager who saw the flaws in our lineup and acted accordingly. Assume Gary did not make changes to counter them?
Shokumbi might have helped the midfield from being out muscled.

I’m not pointing the finger at Hines for the goals but he found himself exposed without much cover so something went wrong. Would need to see the highlights as to what happened but felt all three goals were quite soft.

I hope that even at this early stage of the season this is not going to be the story of our season.

The goal highlights are available on the Cheshunt website. Interesting that their first two goals came from a breakdown in our attack deep in their half, the third was a series of missed tackles and clearances. Not great defending on any of them. Barzey’s goal was as good as it looked at the time.
