Hampton made their customary slow start to a league campaign (not having won an opener since 2006/07). The opening exchanges were cautious as both teams took time to settle to any rhythm. Moone had an early shout turned away by Referee Anthony Coggins (more of him, shortly). Bromley then came on strong and Chiweshe was kept very busy. On 30 minutes, Johnson curled a free-kick just wide. Bromley then went ahead in the 42nd minute, Orlando Smith tucking the ball away – but then a late offside flag seemed to have denied Smith the goal, however after a conversation with his Assistant, Coggins gave the goal. Early in the second half, Tarpey came on to replace the injured Jeffreys and, for a time, Hampton were in control. Moone opened his account for the season, receiving the ball in the penalty area, turned and fired in the equaliser. Pressure was mounted on Bromley but they survived and then at the last, Mike Jones headed in a cross from the left to take all three points.
