THOSE WERE THE DAYS
21st May 1966
Spartan League
Staines Town 2 Hampton 7 (Merry 2, Timberlake, Norman, Rowley, Morris, Earl)
Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Roger Blackmore, Alan Earl, Don Aldridge, Brian Eastman, Brian Morris, Dave Timberlake, Lance Wintle, Dave Norman, Ken Merry, Graham Rowley.
Hampton had just completed retaining both the League championship and the League cup. Four days prior to the visit of Staines, Banstead Athletic had taken Hampton into extra time before Hampton held on to the league cup, 3-1. Unfortunately, there is scarcely a mention in the press reports (that I can find) about the win over Staines. However, Hampton’s final programme of the season does give a few details. Hampton were without Ron King (eye injury) and Peter Allen (broken nose) so Brian Eastman and Dave Norman had come into the team. The Swans programme for the game has this line-up;-
G Westgarth; A Caruna, l Inman, B Caton, D Millard, R Watmore, J Hanson, R Payne, Tony Carroll, B Carey, D Britnell – can’t confirm, though it looks quite strong.
Hampton had just been refused membership of the Athenian League – they would get there a few seasons later. Hampton won their final game at home to Wood Green Town and finished five points clear of runners-up, Boreham Wood – who were promoted to the Athenian League for season 1966/67.
