THOSE WERE THE DAYS
15th May 1998

Middlesex Charity Cup Final (@ Uxbridge FC)

Hampton 2 (Moore 24’ Gallagher 32’) Waltham Abbey 1 (Agbasonu 75’) Att; 300

Hampton;-
Mark Russell; Warren Drew, Darren Powell, Nick Burton (John Crouch, 46’), Steve Cheshire, Barry Moore (Craig Reilly, 43’), Ian Savage, Phil Gallagher, Andy Gray, Nigel Thompson (Francis Vines, 70’), Robin Lewis.

Having just gained promotion to the Isthmian (Ryman) Premier Division, Hampton were strong favourites to dispose of Spartan League side, Waltham Abbey, in the Middlesex Charity Cup Final. However, the Beavers found a determined Waltham side who had them under pressure at various times. Waltham’s young keeper Peter Thorpe was busy early in the game, including making a save from Gray. With just over half-an-hour gone Hampton were 2-0 ahead and seemingly coasting to an easy win. In the 24th minute Moore was given too much space and smacked a shot home from the edge of the box. The second goal came from a nod down by Cheshire that was turned in by Gallagher. Cheshire had a goal ruled out for offside before the Abbey pulled a goal back in the 75th minute with a good strike from the pacey Uzao Agbasonu. Hampton hung on to the lead to win their third Charity Cup.
