THOSE WERE THE DAYS
6th May 1996
Middlesex Charity Cup; Semi-Final
Staines Town 2 (Lucas 5’ Pentland 15’) Hampton 3 (Bayliss 20’ Cheshire 70’ Wilson 88’) Att; 140
Hampton;-
Mark Russell; Danny Collyer, Warren Drew (Lyndon Buckwell), Jim Wigmore (Kevin Duffell), Steve Cheshire, Dave Rattue, Warren Bayliss, Mark Wilson, Barry Moore, Robin Lewis, Darren Smith.
Unused Sub; Richard Sell
As was often the case in the 90s, there was a late season scramble to get Cup competitions finished, in this case it was the Middlesex Charity Cup with Sem-Final and Final being squeezed into the first ten days of May. Staines had recently gained promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division and were short of a few players for this Bank Holiday fixture. Hampton, for their part, were celebrating promotion from Division 2. Putting aside their selection problems, Staines were soon 2-0 ahead through strikes by Paul Lucas and Simon Pentland. Hampton quickly struck back when Bayliss scored. On 70 minutes, Staines’ teenage keeper, Matt Lovett, dropped the ball and Cheshire was on hand to level the score at 2-2 (Lovett would go on to be a legendary player for both the Swans and the Beavers). With just two minutes to go Hampton edged their way into the final when Wilson finished off Bayliss’s shot (a suspicion of handball?). Four days later, Hampton beat Ruislip Manor 3-2 to win the Charity Cup. Staines, one of Hampton’s main rivals back in the day would eventually lose their use of their ground at Wheatsheaf Lane, merge with Staines Lammas, and may even now be possibly facing extinction. The moral being – hang onto your ground, if you can.
