THOSE WERE THE DAYS
12th April 1997

Isthmian (ICIS) League; Division 1

Hampton 1 (Vines 67’) Basingstoke Town 0 Att; 446

Hampton;-
Mark Russell; Darren Powell, Danny Collyer, Bradley Pratt, Steve Cheshire, David Rattue, Craig Reilly, Jamie Horton, Francis Vines (Jim Wigmore, 85’), Derek Bryan (Roy Jellow, 70’), Barry Moore.
Unused Sub; Mark Wilson.

The Beavers kept in touch with the promotion pack with a narrow one-goal win over Basingstoke Town, who were themselves well in the hunt for promotion. Basingstoke had only lost five games all season (one of those being a 2-0 loss at home to Hampton!). Bryan and Moore looked especially sharp in the opening exchanges, Bryan seeing an early lob drift just wide of the target. In the 34th minute a Moore through ball sent Bryan clear only for his cross to be deflected clear by a Basingstoke defender. Late in the first half, a rare attack by the visitors was broken up by Rattue. Early in the second half Powell had to be alert to deny a run by Coombe. In the 67th minute Hampton scored the only goal of the game. Moore and Bryan combined to set up Vines who nudged the ball into the net. Hampton survived the rest of the game despite intense pressure by the visitors. Hampton finished fourth, missing out on promotion by a single point (Chesham United, Basingstoke and Walton & Hersham were promoted).
