THOSE WERE THE DAYS
31st March 1971
Spartan League
Hampton 0 Addlestone 2 (Garrett 44, McCormick 81)
Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Peter Minor, Dave Johnson, Graham Belcher, Hugh Lindsay, Peter Farren, Phil Sperling, Brian Myers, John Peasgood, Jeff Sillett.
Sub Used; Peter Allen.
Hampton, chasing another Spartan League Championship, ran into a bit of a road block when they hosted Addlestone on a Wednesday evening at Beveree. In their four previous clashes at home to Addlestone, the visitors had run out winners and this match was to be no different. Addlestone had become one of Hampton’s ‘bogey’ sides. Addlestone’s forwards, Peter Garrett and McCormick exploited the slowness of the home defenders and Andrews had a busier match than he was usually used to. On one occasion Andrews had to rush out to clear and was beaten by a Garrett lob, but Johnson was on hand to head off the line. Just before the half-time interval, Carey chipped in free-kick McCormick knocked the ball down and Garrett slipped it home. Addlestone’s keeper, Hames, had more to do in the second half. Hames held on to a Sperling lob and then made an excellent save gathering in an Allen shot that had taken a deflection off Myers. In the 81st minute, Addlestone made sure of the win with their second goal. O’Riordan had a shot which deflected off Brant to McCormick, whose shot then hit Earl on its way into the net, somewhat fortunate to say the least. Hoddesdon Town would claim the championship with 55 points; Staines, 2nd, on 52; Hampton, 3rd, 51; Addlestone, 4th, 50. For 1971/72, Staines, Hampton & Addlestone would be accepted into the Athenian League; Hoddesdon remained in the Spartan League.
