Uxbridge Under 18s 2-5 HRBFC Under 18s
Monday, 17th November 2025
Honeycroft, 7.45pm KO

Background
Hampton's Academy Under 18s side travelled to Honeycroft to take on Uxbridge in the Quarter Final of the (Jeff Ritson) Middlesex Senior Youth Cup on Monday evening. A couple of weeks prior (4th November), the young lads had comfortably seen off PFC Victoria in the 2nd Round of the competition, putting on an impressive show to finish 7-1 winners at Bedfont Sports Club against their Combined Counties Youth League opposition. The Beavers were one of several teams to have received a bye into the 2nd Round so our Quarter Final tonight was just our second match in the competition. The other Quarter Finals, also scheduled to take place this week, are Bedfont Sports vs Northwood (also 17th November); Hanworth Villa vs Hanwell Town (18th November); and Edgware & Kingsbury White vs Enfield Borough (19th November).

Pre-Match
Tommy Rance kindly picked up our photographer Ollie Palmer and I at the junction of Bridge Way and Short Way in Whitton and we set off at 18:15, heading towards Sunbury Cross to pick up Casey Jones. With the car full we once again made our way along the M3 and onto the M25, a road well travelled in recent weeks, but this time we headed clockwise and northwards, zooming past the Middlesex villages of Poyle and Longford as the motorway took us around the western perimeter of Heathrow Airport, exiting onto the M4 before heading north along Stockley Road towards Uxbridge. On paper tonight's opponents who, like Hampton, compete in the Isthmian Youth League, would be tougher competition than PFC Victoria, but Tommy was confident of a win! We arrived at Honeycroft at 18:53, enjoying a drink in the clubhouse with Robin Moseley and his friend Andy. I managed to get a photograph of the Uxbridge team sheet, once I had convinced the gentlemen completing it that I was not a scout trying to poach their players! Uxbridge charged a reasonable £3 admission fee and accepted cash or card, as they did throughout the ground. Honeycroft was tidier than I remembered it, my last visit being the first team's Middlesex Senior Cup victory against Wealdstone here in 2012. The ground now boasts an artificial 3G surface (well maintained though... no black dust rising after every tackle!) and the whole ground was smart and uncluttered.

First Half
Hampton, wearing their all-royal blue away kit, lined up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. In front of goalkeeper Lucius Russel, the defensive four consisted of Stan Smith (left); Michael Donnelly (left centre); Jack Griffin (right centre); and Seve Cushing (right). Tom Maddigan and Archie McKenna played in front of the defence; with an attacking midfield three of Kai Cooper (left), Joel Doherty (centre) and Finn McGreevy (right), feeding into Tyler Andrew-Flower who led the forward line. During the early exchanges Uxbridge's keeper Liam Smith miskicked the ball, presenting a goal-scoring opportunity, but the home defence reacted promptly to clear the danger before Hampton could capitalise. Another miskick from the keeper just a minute later made you wonder whether the shot stopper was a bit nervous (he did appear on the younger side!) As Hampton probed the hosts, the ball was chipped through to Stan Smith, who broke forward and squared to Joel Doherty, but unfortunately he didn't have time to control the ball and scuffed his shot.

Finn McGreevy, who scored a brace at Farnham last week, was an obvious outlet for Hampton's attacks. He made a searching run along the right, the first of several this half, but was stopped on this occasion by former Hampton player Che Bell, now playing at centre-back for Uxbridge, who dispossessed McGreevy on the 18-yard line. In the 10th minute Che Bell again repelled a Hampton attack, this time heading away a free kick, as his father encouraged him on from behind the goal! Hampton were shooting towards the southern (Horton Road) end of the ground, where the turnstiles and clubhouse are located, as Tommy, Casey, Robin, Andy and I occupied the spacious covered terrace behind the goal. Uxbridge wore their traditional red shirts with white shorts and red socks. Hampton gradually asserted control of proceedings, holding more possession than the hosts and creating several opportunities. An offside flag against Kai Cooper in the 15th minute cut one move short; Finn McGreevy then launched a cross towards Tyler Andrew-Flower but he couldn't untangle himself from the home centre-back pairing of Che Bell and Frankie Zahran. In the 22nd minute Hampton took the lead, the ball was crossed in from the left towards Kai Cooper, whose powerful header rebounded off the crossbar into the path of Joel Doherty, who made no mistake, blasting home the follow-up shot.

"He's off, lino" appealed Che Bell's father in the 26th minute as a clever through ball saw Tyler Andrew-Flower bearing down on goal, the keeper dealt with it and conceded a corner for his efforts. The ball was whipped in agonisingly close to Andrew-Flower but he couldn't quite connect and it was cleared once again. A rare attack for Uxbridge saw their Captain, Ricco Bullard, place a ball through Hampton's central defenders, seeking Jayden Hub, who couldn't reach the ambitious pass. It was 2-0 to the Beavers in the 30th minute when the home keeper failed to properly clear the ball, Liam Smith's attempted high kick only made it as far as Finn McGreevy, who coolly played in Tyler Andrew-Flower, who slotted low into the far corner from about seven yards out. Hampton appeared to have secured their semi-final spot in the 32nd minute, as Kai Cooper powerfully struck past the on-rushing keeper and into the top left corner (when it seemed it might have been easier to have glanced the ball across goal into the far corner)

In the 35th minute there was a bit of panic at the back as Lucius Russel spilled the ball, with Jack Griffin blasting it out of play to safety. From the resulting corner an Uxbridge player headed wide. It felt as though Hampton sat back a little for the last 10 minutes of the half, the ball certainly enjoyed more time in the Hampton half at this point. Our cause was not helped by sloppily putting the ball out of play then conceding a silly free kick. Lucius Russel made an important reaction save from Uxbridge's Jaylin Cobbin in the 39th minute, before Seve Cushing shielded the ball well and won a free kick to buy Hampton some respite. With the temperature dropping and Uxbridge seeking a way back into the game, no doubt the lads were hoping for the half time whistle. Kai Cooper went flying into an advertising board in the 42nd minute, following a robust challenge by Bevan Goldsby, who received a yellow card (although we think the card was issued for dissent after the event, rather than for the challenge itself). In the last meaningful action of the half, Lucius Russel produced a great reaction save. Two Uxbridge corners followed, Seve Cushing dealt with the first; Che Bell headed the second straight into the grateful arms of Russel.

Half Time
I must commend Uxbridge's set up tonight. The clubhouse was open to serve alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic hot and cold beverages; the television was showing Northern Ireland's World Cup Qualifier against Luxemburg (the Ulstermen led 1-0 at half time). Outside, the burger bar was serving hot food with plenty of cups of tea and hot chocolate being consumed by the respectable crowd of 66. I'm reliably informed that Uxbridge's Under 18s side play all of their home fixtures at Honeycroft. News filtered through from the other Quarter Final taking place in the competition tonight, former Hampton Academy player Joe Wells had scored the only goal of the first half to put Bedfont Sports 1-0 up against Northwood.

Second Half
There was one change for the Beavers at the interval, as Tim Salaghishvili replaced Kai Cooper. Uxbridge curiously made a change in the 52nd minute, when Frankie Zahran came off and Karim Bouzine came on, I'm unsure whether this was forced by injury. Uxbridge had decided not to throw in the towel, and in the 53rd minute gave themselves something to cling onto. Jaylin Cobbin picked up the ball on the halfway line, ran almost half the length of the pitch towards the bye-line, turning past a defender and crossing from the left to Jayden Hub who headed in to make it 1-3. Hampton almost gave an immediate response to this, Tim Salaghishvili found himself in yards of space in the area and struck the ball, his effort being deflected away for a corner. The referee's whistle blew for a foul as the corner came in and Uxbridge had a free kick, I didn't see the offence being committed! In the 56th minute Finn McGreevy did well to keep the ball in play on the right, before finding Tyler Andrew-Flower who flicked the ball back to Archie McKenna who struck with power but too high, the ball striking the front of the terrace roof and rebounding back onto the pitch.

In general the second half was scrappy and uncontrolled, in contrast to the first, and Uxbridge were gradually working their way into the game, helped by some fresh legs being subbed on halfway through. Nevertheless, in the 59th minute Joel Doherty won a corner via a deflected shot, it was sent in towards the head of Jack Griffin but he couldn't quite connect with it. Confusingly one of Uxbridge's substitutes wore shirt #18, he replaced Jaylin Cobbin, but this shirt number did not appear on the team sheet so his identity remains a mystery. As Uxbridge continued to press forward, Che Bell demonstrated that dying art of the long throw-in, launching the ball into the area in the 70th minute. His former team mates clearly anticipated his throw and it was easily dealt with. Uxbridge were enjoying a quarter of an hour spell in the ascendancy, without really posing too much of a threat. Further substitutions in the 72nd minute for both sides slowed proceedings down, Zak Kubinskyy replaced Michael Donnelly for Hampton.

The Beavers were gifted a comedy goal in the 77th minute as miscommunication between Che Bell and Uxbridge keeper Liam Smith landed the ball at Finn McGreevy's feet and he scored into an empty net. In the keeper's defence, Che Bell had initially looked to be shielding the ball for Smith to come and collect; he then changed his mind and kicked the ball to the unexpecting keeper. It was now 4-1 to the Beavers. In the 81st minute Tim Salaghishvili struck a curled effort which was well-saved by the keeper, but from the resulting corner Jack Griffin scored a header from point blank range (it is quite possible the corner kick was heading into the net anyway, so this was a bit of a poach by Griffin!). Hampton led 5-1 which was somewhat flattering. Uxbridge grabbed a consolation goal in the 88th minute as Che Bell struck a powerful left-footed shot into the top corner. Hampton are into the hat for the semi-final draw. One side we won't be playing is Bedfont Sports: Northwood managed to turn that fixture around and won 4-2.
