THOSE WERE THE DAYS

16th November 1996

Mark Russell; Kevin Duffell, Darren Powell (Peter Wood, 80’), Barry Moore, Steve Cheshire, Jim Wigmore, Danny Collyer, Mark Wilson, Aidan Kilner (Darren Smith,78’), Robin Lewis (Warren Bayliss,78’), Craig Reilly.

Touted as Hampton’s best performance of the season to date as they outplayed previously unbeaten Basingstoke Town on their own patch – and in front of the home team’s biggest crowd of the season. As early as the 18th minute Lewis picked up a pass from Reilly and flicked it through to Kilner whose slightly scuffed shot beat Kieron Drake at the near post. Hampton were working well as a unit, Cheshire and Wilson working hard in midfield whilst Powell, Wigmore and Duffell looked secure in defence. Five minutes before half-time Hampton went 2-0 up, Kilner lofted a high ball to Moore who laid it off to Collyer who ran onto the pass and fired his shot past Drake. Hampton were rarely troubled in the second half though there was nervous moment when a shot beat Russell only for the ball to hit the post and rebound to safety.
Basingstoke’s team was populated by a number of players who would later perform for the Beavers; Kieron Drake, Andy Morley, Shaun Mitchell and Rob French.
