The opportunity to see the Beavers put aside the tempestuous first game three days earlier, to go through to the next round of the F A Trophy only managed to attract a poor crowd of 100. Still, Hampton had the skills and the players to get past the visitors Arlesey Town, surely they had enough to see them off? Arlesey Town turned up prepared to out-run and out-think the home side. However, in the early periods of the game, Arlesey’s keeper, Martyn Patching was called upon to make saves from Allen, Currie, Okafor and Paris as the Beavers tried to get on level terms. Arlesey had gone ahead in the 18th minute when Craig Makail-Smith had a stroke of luck when his shot deflected off a Hampton defender. The second half saw Patching busily denying Hampton the chance of an equaliser, conceding corner after corner. In the 88th minute Leon Gutzmore put the game beyond Hampton. A game that brought seven yellow cards (Hampton collecting four of them). Those who stayed at home that night must have had an inkling because no, they didn’t have it on the night, so out they went. The Hampton fans who were there made their feelings obvious by making visiting keeper, Patching, the Man of the Match.
