THOSE WERE THE DAYS
14th October 2000
F A Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

Merthyr Tydfil;-

Unused Sub; Grant Thomas.
HRBFC;-
Eric Talbot; Matt Flitter (Fiston Manuella, 48’), Peter Wood, Peter Barnsby, Nick Burton, Jason Shaw, Gary Holloway (Derek Simpson, 75’), Dean Green, Warren Williams, Craig Maskell, Leroy Griffiths (Ashley Leenders, 88).
Unused Subs; Martin Carter, Mark Russell (Gk).
Didn’t we have a lovely day, the day we went to…Merthyr. On paper, a well-matched contest between two Ryman & Dr Marten’s teams, played at an impressive stadium. Hampton were able to recall (Welsh-born) Flitter at right back which enabled Shaw to go back to his regular midfield position. After just ten minutes, Green rifled in a low drive, as Merthyr were unable to clear Burton’s free-kick. Shortly after Merthyr had to replace their centre-half, Lee Baddeley who sustained a broken ankle. Shortly after Hampton went further ahead when Griffiths was left free in the box and made no mistake with his shot. The game slowed as neither side made much impression on the other. Of the Hampton forwards, Williams looked the likelier to score, Neil Thomas denying him on one occasion. The final goal came following another run into the box by Williams, he was brought down but Maskell picked up the loose ball and squared it to Griffiths who had the easiest of chances from close range.
