THOSE WERE THE DAYS

5th October 1974

Isthmian (Rothmans) League; Division 2

Hampton 3 (Butler 60’ 88’, Vandenberg) Hertford Town 0

Hampton;-
Alan Cooling; Alan Rowbotham, Paul Mason, Alex MacFarlane, Kevin Sheehan, Brian Crandley, Perry Tunesi, John Peasgood, Paul Butler, Steve Rogers, Hans Vandenberg.
Sub; Errol Rhoden.

Hampton registered their third league win of the season (all by 3-0!) and collected another sponsor’s bonus of £75 into the bargain. Both teams had chances to score in the first half with Hampton having a good shout for a penalty when Vandenberg appeared to be pushed over. On the hour mark, Butler put Hampton ahead with his first goal for the club. The goal was made by Peasgood who chased down a long cross, beat a defender and slipped the ball inside to Butler who forced the ball home from close range. Hampton’s second goal was a climax to a four man move. Tunesi broke up a Hertford attack, passed to Butler who then sent Peasgood on another long chase, when the pass came into Vandenberg, he took his time to slot the ball into the far corner. Crandley hit a post before Butler scored his second, dribbling the ball past several defender, and then unleashing a shot from twenty yards.

Butler had a chequered career with Hampton, he joined them four times in the period from 1974/75 to 1985/86, managing to clock up over 100 appearances and scoring over 40 goals.
