THOSE WERE THE DAYS
27th August 1994
F A Cup 1st Preliminary Round
Hampton 1 (French, 29’) Pagham 0
Hampton;-
Paul Riley; Mark Murphy, Jason Fenton, Mark Fabian, Steve Cheshire, Tim Hollands, Rob French, Jim Wigmore, Bobby Watson, Steve Bates, David Prior.
Sub; Glynn Stephens, Lee Bardini
Pagham;-
Dave O’Donnell; Russell Cox, Adie Skeites, Gary Young, Sean Embleton, David Baker, Trevor Cox, Paul Smith, Tom Pegler, Adie Miles, Perry Lee.
Subs; Mark Tinson, P MacIntosh.
Hampton’s entry into the F A Cup came at a very early stage with a visit from Pagham of the Sussex County League. Hampton had problems getting a team together, leading scorer, Richard Newbury, was taken ill that morning and they were already without Michael Swan and Dave Crook. It was the visitors who threatened first, Adie Miles firing just wide after five minutes. Hampton were spurred into action; Watson hit the bar and Prior had a header cleared off the line. On the half-hour, Prior crossed in and French fired the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. Early in the second half, Riley was called upon to make saves from Tom Pegler and Paul Smith. Watson had a goal disallowed for a foul, Prior and Wigmore went close before Hampton ran out 1-0 winners and what looked like a tougher next round game against Gravesend & Northfleet.
