THOSE WERE THE DAYS
8th May 1973

Middlesex Charity Cup Final

Hampton 0 Hayes 1 (Drabwell)

Hampton;-
Chris Page; Alan Earl, Ken Reed, Steve Markham, Peter Minor, Ian Wenlock, Peter Allen (Peter Farren), Ted Yorke, Roy Cutler, Johnny Eales, Phil Sperling.

Hayes;-
K Raine; Kenny Kent, John O’Sullivan, Bobby Hatt, G Thomas, Dave Neville, Les Hartridge, Peter Drabwell, Robin Friday, Tony Amos, J Wilks.
Sub; Tony Roberts

A repeat of the 1971/72 final (with the same result). Hayes made all the early running and looked to have taken a lead in the 5th minute through Peter Drabwell, only to have the goal chalked off for handball. Despite probing play by Wenlock the Hampton forwards were being shackled by the Hayes defence. For Hayes, Robin Friday tried his usual tricks, including trying to win a penalty. All square at half time, it was Hayes who secured the trophy with the only goal in the 54th minute. John O’Sullivan began the move putting Peter Drabwell into a good position, a long cross reached Robin Friday on the edge of the penalty area, he took the ball to the bye-line and chipped it across to the far post where Peter Drabwell met it with a right-footed strike. Hampton responded bringing on Farren for Allen. Eales hit a shot over the crossbar before Dave Neville hit his shot over the Hampton crossbar. Peter Drabwell almost had a second for Hayes, heading wide. Hayes won the Charity Cup for the third successive season emphasising their standing as a top Isthmian League side. Next season Hampton would be an Isthmian League team, joining the newly formed Division 2.

Is it "The Greatest Player You Never Saw?" It's not a bad read but isnt exactly in depth. There must be a better one to be written.
