At one stage Hampton were 2-0 up and looking good for all three points when a deflection turned the game back in St Albans favour. The majority of the first half was played in the visitor’s half, restricting them to long ball clearances that were meat and drink for Barnsby and Burton. It wasn’t until just before half-time that Hampton took the lead. The busy Adams was tripped in the area, Shaw took the penalty, converting to Tony Roberts’s right. In the 48th minute Adams was on hand to strike Williams’s cross, goalward, Roberts smothered it but couldn’t keep hold of the ball, Adams ‘shinning’ in the rebound. Hampton looked comfortable until a shot by Chris Piper took a deflection off a Hampton defender and went in off an upright. Ten minutes from time, Martin Randall lashed in the equaliser. Piper could have won the game for City but failed to connect from a couple of yards out
