It would be interesting to hear the reasoning for Nash being brought back in. Was Underwood being dropped because of the third goal on Saturday, carrying a knock or something else? Sodje and De Havilland not picked in the squad, again injury or something else? And why did Ince not get off the bench in either game? Is he not good enough to face a step 4 team or, in reality, still injured ( I doubt it would have changed much but just highlights again the mystery of his signing)? Whatever we merely postponed the most embarrassing club defeat since probably the VCD FA Cup exit in 2014 from Saturday to Tuesday. The club has to decide pretty quickly the reasons for the dreadful start to the season and if Dowse is the right man to fix it. It's his squad after all. Despite a better performance against Chelmsford it feels we've dropped right back to where we were at Salisbury on the opening day of the season. As far as I can tell a lot of the squad needs to be moved on but in reality with contracts in place that is unlikely to be something that could happen quickly enough. Would a change of manager get more out of the squad? Depends who might come in and with what financial backing. Where do you find better players at this stage of the season? The two loanees so far have been relatively inexperienced and not turned the dial sufficiently. Would a new manager have more access to better players?
Isn't this a worse defeat than VCD though? I'm sure they might have been in the division below us. I'm thinking back to dreadful exits from the eighties etc...
I don't honestly know where we go from here. I can't imagine this squad is that cheaply assembled and I imagine a lot of them are on contracts. All of which is going to make this season a tad on the tortuous side if the players can't be coached or organised into better results. Who the right management team to do that might be the subject of some debate at the moment. In my view though there is absolutely no point in organising another game for our blank Saturday. Use it for sorting ourselves out instead...extra training, whatever that may entail.

VCD were in the same league as us at the time, so would agree that yesterday’s defeat is far far worse.

I'd forgotten that but at the time I think they were bottom of the league. Taunton were two divisions below when we lost there 2-1 in the FA Cup in 2016 but we did play somewhat better if still lost.

In terms of humiliation, the closest I can think of is the 6-2 defeat at Arlesey in 11-12, the season we went down from NLS. However, they were just the one division below us, newly promoted into the Southern League Premier, and went on to finish 18th that season.

Ouch, yes, that one was pretty bad but I'm sure there are worse...what about the home defeat to Harringey Borough? Was that in the FA Cup, or the Vase? They were way below us at the time if memory serves...I'm sure Les or Tony will recall, or even suggest worse...

Remember losing to Stanstead after a replay one year, drew at Beveree and travelled to the wilds of Essex / Hertfordshire. They were an Essex Senior League side and we were just embarking on our first season in the Isthmian League Division 1 following promotion the previous season. Not sure if there was still an Isthmian Div 3 back then but that would be a 2 or 3 division gap.

There was still a Division Three, this is the only occasion I can find that we’ve lost to a side three leagues below. Circumstances are not too dissimilar to yesterday’s defeat, as we were 2-0 down at home to Stansted in the original tie, with two late goals earning us a replay. This was an opportunity we failed to capitalise on, losing 2-1.
Having gone back as far as 1991-92, the only times we have lost to teams two leagues lower are Taunton Town, (16-17) Paulton Rovers, (03-04) and Haringey Borough. (93-94)

Paulton Rovers away in the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round, 2003/04, lost 2-1. I think Paulton were a Western League side at the time. Hampton were in Isthmian League Division One South which was Step Three. I seem to recall the coach breaking down as well, just to top the day off!
I remember we had scored a great victory over Kingstonian at Beveree in the previous round.

Stansted! Oh my God yes...complete forgotten that one, or blanked it out.

Sounds like changes incoming, both in playing staff and training. Also very much looks like won't be pulling a game forward to the 3rd to give Dowse the opportunity to make the alterations to the squad he wants.

I did feel sorry for him in that interview. He obviously cares. And he's obviously a bit mystified by a lot of what's going on.
But there's a degree of deflecting going on here. He's saying there's an attitude problem among a LOT of the players. And he's saying he's been disappointed with the quality of a lot of the players he's signed. There's a common denominator here - Dowse. Sentiment aside, it's his job to make sure there's not an attitude problem. It's his job to sign players who can deliver. It's his job to devise a training schedule that works.
On Saturday, the players seemed confused to me. I don't think there was a lack of effort, but just confusion — no concentrated support for the man on the ball, and no co-ordinated pressing. We're also one of the quietest teams I've heard in a long time.
And I hate singling out players, so I won't name him here. But there's one particular player who got back into the team last night who should just not be playing at all — anybody else would be better. His lack of running (while pointing to players that others should be marking???) is baffling.
Last season Dowse made some excellent loan signings. We can only hope that the same happens again, but that's hoping a lot.
