THOSE WERE THE DAYS
1st March 1997
Isthmian League (ICIS) Division 1
Hampton 1 (Cheshire) Marlow 0 Att; 182

Mark Russell; Peter Wood, Bradley Pratt, Jim Wigmore, Steve Cheshire, Dave Rattue, Jamie Horton, Mark Wilson, Steve Stairs, Francis Vines, Barry Moore.
Unused Subs; Detsi Kruszynski, Kevin Duffell, Danny Collyer.

A hard-fought match against relegation threatened Marlow went Hampton’s way thanks to another goal from midfielder Cheshire. The match kicked off to the sound of drills (Hampton’s new 100-seater stand was needed for the visit of Aldershot Town in a fortnight). Both keepers were brought into early action, Hampton’s Russell had to move quickly to thwart a Marlow attack. Cheshire and Horton combined to set Wood up for a cross which just eluded Stairs. Pratt had to recover a dangerous situation, earning himself a yellow card for bringing down Marlow’s Floyd. In the 34th minute a goalmouth scramble saw Marlow’s keeper Chambers relieved to see the ball fly off a defender’s boot onto the crossbar. During the second half two players were sent off, Wilson in the 56th minute for a clumsy tackle earning him a second yellow, followed by Marlow’s Nelson for two reckless challenges in two minutes. It was left to Cheshire to make the points safe for the Beavers in the 69th minute, tucking the ball away after a tackle on Stairs allowed the ball to run kindly into his path, in front of goal.
