THOSE WERE THE DAYS
August 25th 2007
Football Conference (Blue Square) South
HRBFC 1 Newport County 0 Att; 493
R Lake (pen)

Matt Lovett; Graham Harper, Ryan Lake, Orlando Jeffrey, Marcello Fernandes (Alex Haddow 87’), Dean Wells, Alan Inns, Elliott Godfrey (Elliott Frost, 81’), Ian Hodges, Shaun McAuley (Barrie Matthews, 65’), Stuart Lake.
Subs not used; Dudley Gardner & Steve Omonua

A match that seemed to be drifting to a 0-0 draw was suddenly brought to life by a late penalty with just eight minutes to go. Newport defender, Damon Searle unaccountably raised his arm (maybe calling for offside) and deflected Frost’s cross away – penalty! After several minutes of protestations, Ryan Lake held his nerve and squeezed home the penalty despite Glyn Thompson getting his hand to the ball. The match was dominated by the two keepers Thompson, and Hampton’s Lovett, but in the end, it was a controversial referee’s decision that ended Newport’s unbeaten start to the season.

The Lake brothers both joined from Ashford Town (Mx).
