Fitting that we enter the relegation zone for the first time after that. It was harrowing. Ebsfleet looked like scoring every time they came forward.

No one expected much from today’s game but it ended up with a sizeable spanking which won’t help confidence going into three vital home games. Yet we started brightly and took an early lead through Donaldson’s header before Ebbsfleet could find their gear. After 15 minutes they started to threaten down the flanks exposing Jenkins in particular who got booked for a clumsy challenge. We managed to hang on with some last ditch defending but eventually conceded a penalty followed by a second just before half time. A pity because we battled well but hard to say Ebbsfleet didn’t deserve their lead. A tactical switch to a back three at half time saw Jenkins replaced by Coulthurst but it proved only to open us up more down our right flank and Ebbsfleet scored three more with swift and decisive moves, one of which came from a bad error by Deadfield with a poor pass. Again a pity as Dunne had just brought it back to 3-2 after a corner with a good finish. A last in injury time made it 6. We couldn’t match their clinical finishing despite some good passages of play.

This defeat won’t probably affect whether we are relegated, the next few games might. We were missing Julian and Davis today. Clifton was rather isolated and managed only one effort which was well off target. Unfortunately it is looking like we are not going to see any more significant recruits so may have to go with what we have.

Thanks for the report Tony, Ebbsfleet can afford players of a standard, we cannot get. As you say the next three games will go a long way to deciding our fate. The loss of Julian and Davis did not help.
Hope you are wrong about new recruitment.

No doubt some extra bodies but not getting vibes about real game changing signings.

In Mel’s post match comments he said that we decided to go toe to toe with Ebbsfleet rather than park the bus. We did play some good football going forward but also left ourselves very open to the counter. The net result was a heavy defeat much heavier than our recent games with Ebbsfleet in which we were comprehensively outplayed. I just wonder whether the psychological impact of a heavy defeat will outweigh the benefits of having a go.
