THOSE WERE THE DAYS
9th May 1970
Spartan League
Hampton 1 (Farren, pen,60’) Leighton Town (Bailey 62’) 1
Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Keith Hanna, Dave Richards, Dave Johnson, Hugh Lindsay, Peter Farren, Micky Roach, Brian Myers, Peter Allen, Arthur Rowlands (Ray Monk).
Leighton Town;-
Wells; Fowler, Lynch, Walker, Bailey, McCafferty, McCann, Turner, Horne, McCormick, Tyes (Blake 57’).
A point was sufficient for Hampton to gain their fourth Spartan Championship in six seasons. Both teams had chances in the first half. Early on Leighton’s McCormick had a shot deflect away off Johnson, followed by Bailey heading over from the corner. Hampton’s Hanna beat Wells, only to see Fowler clear off the goal-line. Horner volleyed over as Leighton seemed to be dominating in midfield. In the second half Farren, played in by Myers, shot narrowly wide. Hampton took a fortunate lead on the hour. A typical blast from Lindsay was parried by Wells but then Lynch handled the ball. Farren, an excellent penalty taker, drove the ball past Wells. However, just two minutes later Leighton equalised when Bailey beat Andrews from 20 yards. Rowlands and Lindsay both went close to scoring a second. With the championship won, skipper Richards headed the ball against his own crossbar in the 88th minute to protect the win. A few minutes later, it was Richards who stepped up to raise aloft the championship trophy.
By the time the next season kicked off, Hampton would be competing in the Athenian League.
