As retained lists from other clubs begin to be released I thought I’d start next season’s squad thread up. It won’t be long before we hear news on some of our current squad departing or signing on, so will be interested to hear folks’ thoughts on who you would retain and release.

Fernandes is confirmed to stay and Max I would expect to stay on as he is assistant manager. Would hope we can keep Marcus Dewhurst as he has been released from Aldershot. Also really hope we keep Alan Massey, Reece Grego-Cox and Mike Atkinson.

I think I'd also be happy with Sayers, Field, Silva and Fasanmade being retained.

If there's one other loan player we can keep, I'd like to keep Vaz.

Of course, this will depend on what budget Dowse has, which loan players might become available out of contract, etc. Given how difficult our season has been, you've got to ask yourself how many of the current squad should be retained. Fernandez and Kretzschmar are the only two on contract. I would say Sayers, Field, Grego-Cox and probably Massey and Silva are definitely worth retaining although not sure Massey would always be automatic first choice. I am not sure what Kiernan's aspirations are and his fitness whilst with us wasn't great so he would need to up his form if he wanted to stay. Of the loanees, only Dewhurst is definitely available and think did enough to be signed on permanently but there may be other keepers to consider. Atkinson on his best form would be a keep but we didn't see enough of it to be an automatic yes. Vaz if he became available would be a good shout. We need more resilience across the team when things don't go to plan, particularly in midfield and definitely another decent CF as Grego-Cox is always vulnerable to injury. Speaking of which, no need to take any more risks with players with poor injury records.

I thought Frimpong was really solid for his loan period and, with Worthing going up, I'd imagine his game time would be even more reduced. He would be a good addition as part of a stronger squad.

I'd want Deadfield to stay. I am always quite surprised at how low he seems to rate with many supporters - he's a superb technician, and managers clearly love him. Pretty sure he's won Manager's Player of the Year at least twice, possibly three times, in the six years I've seen him at Hampton.

He can clearly play, there's no question of that, but like some other skillful players he can go missing a bit when we're struggling to get a foothold in certain games. That's not necessarily his fault, but it does seem to make some supporters question what he does.

If we can keep hold of:
Dewhurst
Vaz
Fernandez
Sawyers
Field
Frimpong
Kretzschmar
Vaughan
Grego-Cox
Nkrumah
…then honestly, that’s a really solid core to build around.
There’s enough youth, energy and technical quality there already. Add a couple of smart loans & a bit of experience and suddenly the squad starts looking very competitive.

Eduino Vaz and Nana Boateng released by Sutton. Davide Rodari also released but not so sure he’d be as good a signing as the others two would.
