THOSE WERE THE DAYS
30th January 1971
Spartan League Cup; 1st Round
Huntley & Palmers 1(Lintott 2’) Hampton 6 (Farren 50’ 82’, Rowlands 19’, Edwards og 25’, Myers 40’, Lindsay 62’ )
Hampton;-
Andy Wellsted; Alan Earl, Keith Hanna, Ray Monk, Dave Johnson, Hugh Lindsay, Peter Allen, Arthur Rowlands (Phil Sperling), Peter Farren, Micky Roach, Brian Myers.
Huntley & Palmers shocked Hampton by taking a lead in the 2nd minute, but in doing so stirred up a hornet’s nest, as Hampton struck back with six unanswered goals. Wellsted fumbled a low cross and Lintott took full advantage of the situation. With nineteen minutes gone it was all-square, Myers with a clever flick put Allen away, Huntley’s keeper Gurney parried Allen’s shot but Rowlands was on hand to score. Gurney twice blocked shots from Myers, but could do nothing in the 25th minute when one of his defenders, Edwards, volleyed in an own goal. Lindsay and Farren both went close before Myers scored five minutes before half-time. Myers latched onto a through ball and lobbed Gurney to put Hampton 3-1 ahead. Wellsted spent most of the second half as a spectator as Hampton scored a further three goals without reply. In the 50th minute a quick exchange of passes between Myers and Farren led to the last-named putting the ball in the net. Lindsay hammered in one of his trade-mark free kicks in the 62nd minute with Gurney rooted to the spot. The sixth goal was scored eight minutes from time, Farren finishing from close range.
