THOSE WERE THE DAYS
4th October 1986

F A Trophy 1st Qual Round
Hampton 3 (Duncalfe 2, Walkes) Uxbridge 1 Att; 232

Hampton ;-
Julian Gray; Razzo Beach, Bobby Green, Jim Wigmore, Tim Hollands, Zarak Shafique, Sean O’Connell, Malcolm Dickenson, Ricky Walkes, Horace Nelson, Paul Duncalf.
Subs; Steve Rogers, Dwight Marshall

Quite a result this, for Hampton, as they beat Uxbridge for the first time in fifteen years. Uxbridge were described as a ‘physical’ side. Their goalkeeper Roger Nicholls ( a veteran of over 850 games for Uxbridge) was the busier of the two keepers. The opening exchanges saw Uxbridge in the ascendancy, Steven Pope and Robert Eccles had opportunities before Hampton went ahead in the 20th minute. Walkes shot from outside the penalty area and the ball went through Nicholls’ hands. Uxbridge were still a danger, Gray having to cut out a cross from Jon Flanagan. Just before half-time Duncalf collected a pass from O’Connell and fired in past the diving Nicholls. Shorthly after half time, Hampton spurned three attempts to score, Nicholls clearing a free-kick from Wigmore, Duncalf hitting the post before Roy Marshall finally got the ball away. Hampton made the game safe in the low-hit corner from O’Connell. Two minutes from time, Uxbridge scored when Bobby Roper struck a penalty past Gray.

Some great players in that line up. Bobby Green, (a former Amateur Cup winner and England Amateur, alongside Dicko, Holland, Wigmore, Rogers, O'Connell, Marshall and Walkes. I always thought northerner Paul Duncalf was a really underrated player too.
