THOSE WERE THE DAYS
19th September 1964
Spartan League
Tring Town 1 Hampton 1 (Griffin (p))
Hampton ;-
Joe Andrews; Roger Blackmore, Derek Edwards, Don Bevan, Ron King, Peter Jennings, Mervyn Bines, Lance Wintle, Johnny Whing, Ken Merry, Ron Griffin.
Described as a ‘dull and drab draw’, Hampton were held to a 1-1 draw at Tring. Despite the dropped point (2 points for a win), the Beavers had a three-point lead over Willesden, in second place. The pitch, narrow and bumpy, came in for criticism as not helping Hampton to play their usual game. Andrews was brought into action early before a Griffin shot struck the keeper’s foot, then Bines and Whing both went close. A minute before half time, Griffin was fouled, getting up to strike home the penalty himself. The second half deteriorated into kick and rush, Whing led the line well but had little support up front. Tring equalised following a goalmouth scramble after failing to clear from a corner. Hampton would hold onto their top position and claim the championship at the end of the season.

I remember that game well, their goal was scored by a Tring player kicking the ball out of Andrew’s hands! I remember him coming off with his hands bandaged up. A long time ago!
