THOSE WERE THE DAYS
18th April 1972
Athenian League Division 2
Hampton 0 Worthing 3

Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Peter Minor, Ken Reed, Steve Markham, Ian Wenlock, Peter Farren, Micky Roach, Johnny Eales, Peter Allen, Jeff Sillett.
Sub; Hugh Lindsay

An error-ridden performance by Hampton allowed Worthing to sweep to a 3-0 win and put them back in the race for the runners-up spot. Whiteaker made a mistake that led to Worthing’s first goal in the 37th minute, his attempted thrown clearance went straight to Mickey Streeter, who hit the ball straight past the out of position keeper. Worthing’s second goal came when Whiteaker contrived to dive over a back pass from Reed and allowed the ball to roll into the net. Markham had two efforts on goal, both of which struck an upright, Earl had a shot blocked on the line by B Aymes, nothing was going right for Hampton. In injury time, Minor added to Hampton’s catalogue of mistakes when he was caught in possession by Ford, who’s shot hit the post but Graves was on hand to take advantage of the error.
On the back of this win, Worthing would indeed take the runners-up spot by just a point from….Hampton!
