THOSE WERE THE DAYS
6th April 1996
Isthmian (ICIS) League Division 2
Leatherhead 1 Hampton 2 (Smith, Wigmore) Att; 120
Mark Russell; Danny Collier, Warren Drew, Jim Wigmore, Steve Cheshire, Dave Rattue, Barry Moore (Jon Reilly, 47’) (Mark Fabian, 72), Gerry Harvey, Warren Bayliss (Richard Sell, 56’), Robin Lewis, Darren Smith.
An excellent three points, which moved Hampton up to second place, in a particularly poor and physical game, including an incident which put Reilly out for the season. Moore had limped off early in the second half after being caught with a number of heavy tackles, bringing Reilly into the game. Leatherhead took the lead when Paul Reed scored after 53 minutes. On the hour mark Smith levelled the score after some battling approach work by Harvey. Some ten minutes later Wigmore nodded in Rattue’s free-kick to steer Hampton into a 2-1 lead. A few minutes late a lunging tackle by Tom Leslie broke Reilly’s leg. Leslie instantly called for assistance when he realised the seriousness of the injury (Leslie was booked). There then followed a twelve-minute delay before Reilly could be stretchered off. Reilly would not return to Hampton next season.
