THOSE WERE THE DAYS
13th March 1986
Isthmian League Cup (AC Delco) Semi-Final 1st Leg
Hampton 1 (M Wilson) Sutton United 0 Att; 278

Chris Vagg; Robbie Winterhalter, Malcolm Dickinson, Tim Hollands, Jim Wigmore, Sean O’Connell, Chris Hills, Mark Wilson, Ricky Walkes, Dwight Marshall, Perry Tunesi.
Sub; Mark Jonas

Wilson’s first goal of the season earned Hampton a valuable first leg win in the semi-final of the AC Delco Cup. Premier Division Sutton United maintained long periods of pressure on Hampton’s goal but the Beavers stood firm. Mark Golley volleyed a shot against the bar, Dickinson headed a John Rains effort off the line as Sutton pressed forward. Late in the half, Hampton got themselves into the contest with efforts from Walkes and Wigmore. In the second half Hampton started to pump high balls in to test the Sutton defence. A Dickinson free-kick was headed clear to the edge of the penalty area, Wilson pounced on it and fired a shot that went in off Fearon’s far post. Sutton came straight back at Hampton, Dickinson cleared a dropped cross, Walkes blocked a shot and Dickinson, again, was there to head clear – it was backs against the wall. Hampton still had chances to snatch a second, Marshall lobbed wide with Fearon beaten and then Walkes managed to hit the crossbar from the six- yard line.
Sutton eventually got to the final, but it took 3-1 win in a replay after the second leg ended with a 2-2 aggregate score.

I was at this. Yet another Hampton side with some fine players in it, who somewhat underachieved in the league. The Sutton side was very strong and experienced so we did well to run them that close.

Remember being at the Second Leg.

Walkes hit a penalty that I don't think has landed yet.
