THOSE WERE THE DAYS
10th March 1973
Athenian League Division 2
Wingate 1 Hampton 4 (Cutler 2, Farren, Yorke)

Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Ken Reed, Brian Crandley, Peter Minor, Ted Yorke, Peter Allen, Ian Wenlock, Roy Cutler, Johnny Eales, Peter Farren.
Sub; Phil Sperling

After a poor run, Hampton returned to winning form in a game in which all five goals came in the second half. During the first half Wingate had the better of the match, Johnny Oxford had missed a clear-cut chance and had had a goal disallowed. The main action started in the second half as Hampton surged into a 4-0 lead. Yorke took a corner, Allen’s header was blocked, but Farren prodded the ball through a forest of legs. Hampton went 2-0 up when Earl’s cross was headed on by Eales and Cutler ran around the Wingate defence to smash a volley past the keeper. Yorke then converted a centre from Allen 3-0. Two minutes from time Cutler received the ball from Allen, rounded the keeper to score from a narrow angle for his tenth goal in fifteen games. There was just enough time for Wingate to get a consolation goal, Glynn hitting a twenty-five yarder past Whiteaker.
